Can-Am Defender Drive Belt Guide: Which Belt Fits HD7, HD8, HD9 & HD10, OEM Numbers & How to Change It

The Can-Am Defender is a work truck with a CVT, and that combination is hard on belts. Towing a trailer, crawling a food plot in low range, plowing snow, hauling a loaded bed — all of it keeps the belt slipping in the sheaves instead of locked up, and slipping is what turns a belt into smoke.

Defender belt fitment

Fix'N Offroad carries the Hunterworks USA-made CVT drive belt covering 2016-2025 Can-Am Defender HD8, HD9 and HD10 models, including MAX (six-seat) versions. The Hunterworks belt is cut slightly wider and thicker than the stock belt, which does three things on a Defender specifically: it adds grip, it smooths out the jerky low-speed takeoff these machines are known for, and it adds reliability under load.

On the HD7 and HD11: these are newer additions to the Defender line and fitment is not identical across the range. Rather than guess, call (662) 631-9254 with your year and model and we will confirm the correct belt. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you install the wrong belt.

OEM cross-reference numbers

For the Can-Am Defender HD8 and HD10, the OEM belt part numbers are:

• 422280656 — current Can-Am OEM number
• 422280654 — earlier number, commonly cross-referenced

Here is something worth knowing, because it causes a lot of wrong orders: this Defender belt family is shared with the Maverick Trail and Maverick Sport, and it is not the same belt as the turbocharged Maverick X3. The X3 Turbo runs OEM 422280652, a different part. Marketplace listings routinely lump the Defender and the X3 together under one heading. They are not interchangeable. How to change a Defender belt

You do not need to pull the primary clutch. With the right tool this is a job you can do at the field edge with hand tools.

1. Let it cool. A clutch that has been working will burn you. Give it a few minutes.
2. Pull the CVT cover. Remove the outer clutch cover bolts and set the cover aside. Keep the bolts somewhere they will not disappear into the mud.
3. Identify your secondary. This matters on a Defender. The 2016-2019 HD8 and HD10 use a two-roller secondary clutch; the 2020-2025 HD10 uses a three-roller secondary. The Hunterworks Can-Am belt change tool is sold for both styles, and there is an option to buy both bells if you own machines of each type.
4. Spread the secondary. Thread the belt change tool into the secondary clutch and turn it. The sheaves open and the belt drops into the valley.
5. Lift the old belt out over the top of the primary. Note which direction the printing faced.
6. Clean while it is open. Wipe the black belt dust out of both clutches with brake cleaner and a rag. Belt dust is abrasive and it shortens the life of the belt you are about to install. Check the sheave faces for glazing or grooving.
7. Install the new belt the same direction the old one came out, then back the tool out so the sheaves close on it.
8. Reinstall the cover, confirm the CVT intake and exhaust ducting is fully seated, and take it easy for the first few miles.

Break the new belt in

A new CVT belt comes out of the mold with a slick surface. Give it roughly 20 to 30 miles of easy, varied riding before you tow or work it hard — no heavy loads, no long low-range crawling, no wide-open pulls. It takes twenty minutes of patience and it measurably extends belt life.

Why Defenders eat belts

• Low range, low speed, heavy load. This is the classic Defender belt-killer. Crawling loaded at 3 mph keeps the belt slipping rather than gripping, and slipping generates heat fast. Where you can, keep the RPM up.
• Heat with nowhere to go. Defender clutch cooling is marginal when the machine is working hard. Clutch cooling kits and keeping the ducting clear both help. Check that no duct is crushed, disconnected or packed with mud.
• Water. If you drown the CVT, stop and drain it before you drive on. A wet belt slips instantly.
• Towing above what the clutching was set up for. A stock Defender clutch was calibrated around stock tires and stock loads. Big tires plus a trailer is a different machine.
• Belt dust buildup. Every belt sheds. That dust coats the sheaves and reduces grip. Clean the housing at every belt change.

FAQ

How do I tell an HD8 from an HD10? The badging on the bed side and the model line on your registration will both tell you. If you are still unsure, call us with the VIN year and model and we will sort it out.

Can I use an X3 belt in my Defender? No. Different part, different application. See the OEM numbers above.

Should I carry a spare? Yes — a spare belt and the belt change tool, in the machine. On a work machine that is the difference between a delay and a recovery.

My Defender lurches when I take off. Is the belt bad? It might be, but jerky engagement is also just a Defender characteristic. A wider, thicker belt helps noticeably. If it is severe, have the clutches inspected too.

Does the belt go on a particular way? Same direction it came off. Most belts are printed on one side; keep it facing the same way.
