Can-Am Maverick X3 Drive Belt Guide: Which Belt Fits, OEM Numbers & How to Change It
If you own a Can-Am Maverick X3, you already know the belt is the part that decides whether the day ends at the truck or on the end of a tow strap. The Rotax turbo makes serious torque, the CVT has to absorb all of it, and a stock belt that gets hot enough will glaze, slip and then come apart in a hurry.
This guide covers which belt fits which X3, the OEM numbers it cross-references, how to change one in the field, and the handful of things that actually add belt life. If you would rather just ask a person, call us at (662) 631-9254 and we will match a belt to your machine before you spend a dime.
First: turbo or 900?
This is where most wrong orders start. Can-Am built the X3 in two very different flavors:
- X3 Turbo models — the turbocharged 900 ACE triple. This covers the X3 Turbo, Turbo R, Turbo RR, DS, RS, X DS, X RS, X MR, X RC, MAX versions of all of the above, and Smart-Shox trims.
- X3 900 (non-turbo) — the naturally aspirated 900. Far less common, and it is listed separately for a reason.
Order by the listing that names your model. If your machine says Turbo anywhere on the badge or in the VIN description, you want the turbo belt. If you have the naturally aspirated 900, use the X3 900 listing. When in doubt, call before you order — a belt is cheap compared to a day lost.
Maverick X3 belt fitment
| Model | Years | Belt |
|---|---|---|
| X3 Turbo, Turbo R, Turbo RR (all DS / RS / X DS / X RS / X MR / X RC trims) | 2017-2025 | Hunterworks X3 Turbo belt |
| X3 MAX Turbo, MAX Turbo R / RR (4-seat, all trims) | 2017-2025 | Hunterworks X3 Turbo belt |
| X3 900 (non-turbo) | 2018-2023 | Hunterworks X3 900 belt |
Hunterworks belts are made in the USA with a proprietary construction that runs a stronger cord and a higher-heat compound than the belt Can-Am ships. That is the whole point: same dimensions, more margin before it cooks.
OEM cross-reference numbers
For the turbocharged X3, the current Can-Am OEM belt part number is 422280652. Over the life of the platform Can-Am has run several numbers that supersede into each other, and you will see these on old boxes, dealer invoices and aftermarket listings:
- 422280652 — current OEM number for X3 Turbo models
- 422280651 — earlier number, superseded
- 417300383 — earlier number, superseded
One important warning: the Can-Am Defender does not use the same belt as the X3, even though some marketplace listings lump them together and even though the numbers look similar. Defender HD8, HD9 and HD10 belts carry their own part numbers. If you have a Defender, start on the Defender page instead of this one.
How to change an X3 belt
The good news is that on an X3 you do not have to pull the primary clutch to change a belt. With the right tool it is a ten-minute job you can do at the trailhead.
- Let it cool. A clutch that just came off the throttle will burn you. Give it a few minutes.
- Pull the clutch cover. Remove the outer CVT cover bolts and take the cover off. Keep the bolts somewhere they will not roll into the sand.
- Spread the secondary. Thread the Hunterworks Can-Am belt change tool into the secondary clutch. The X3 uses a three-roller secondary, so make sure you have the three-roller bell. Turning the tool opens the sheaves and drops the belt down into the valley.
- Pull the old belt out over the top of the primary. Note which way the printing faced so you install the new one the same direction.
- Inspect while it is open. Look for glazing, chunked cogs, frayed cords and a dusty black clutch housing. Wipe the belt dust out of the sheaves with brake cleaner and a rag — belt dust is an abrasive and it accelerates the next failure.
- Install the new belt over the primary and into the spread secondary, then back the tool out so the sheaves close on the belt.
- Reinstall the cover, make sure the CVT intake and exhaust ducting is fully seated, and take it easy for the first few miles.
If you do need to get the primary off for other clutch work, the Can-Am clutch puller for new models and the Hunterworks Can-Am clutch holder tool are the correct tools. Do not improvise with a pry bar — the crankshaft threads are not worth the gamble.
Break the new belt in
A new CVT belt has a slick surface from the mold. Give it roughly 20 to 30 miles of easy, varied riding — no wide-open pulls, no towing, no sustained low-speed crawling — so the belt seats to the sheaves. Belts that get abused in the first hour are the ones that come apart at month three.
What actually kills X3 belts
- Heat. The single biggest factor. A Can-Am X3 CVT blower pushes fresh air through the clutch housing and pulls the hot air out, which is a real difference on long desert runs and hot mud days.
- Blocked ducting. The X3 relies on its intake and exhaust ducts. If a duct is crushed, disconnected or packed with mud, the clutch has no airflow at all. Check them any time the cover is off.
- Low-speed crawling. Long stretches at slow speed keep the belt slipping in the sheaves instead of locking up. Where you can, use a lower gear and more RPM.
- Water. If you drown the clutch, stop and drain it. A wet belt slips, and a slipping belt turns to smoke fast.
- Big tires and no clutch work. Going up in tire size without touching the clutching loads the belt every launch.
FAQ
How long should an X3 belt last? There is no honest single number. Riders who stay out of deep mud and keep the clutch clean routinely see thousands of miles. Hard mud, dunes, big tires and heavy throttle can cut that dramatically.
Should I carry a spare? Yes. A spare belt and the belt change tool live in the machine. That combination is the difference between a delay and a recovery.
Do I need to replace the belt after one slip? Not always, but inspect it. Glazing — a shiny, hard surface on the sidewalls — means it has already slipped enough to lose grip, and it will not come back.
Which direction does the belt go on? Same direction it came off. Most belts have printing on one side; keep it facing the same way.
Will an X3 belt fit my Defender or Commander? No. Use the Defender or Commander pages.
