Polaris Ranger XP 1000 Drive Belt Guide: Which Belt Fits (2017-2026), OEM Numbers & How to Change It

The Polaris Ranger XP 1000 is the best-selling utility side-by-side in America, and the drive belt is the one part every owner will replace eventually. The problem is that Polaris changed the clutching between 2017 and 2019, so "a Ranger XP 1000 belt" is not one belt. Order the wrong one and it either won't fit or it will slip and burn in a weekend. This guide tells you exactly which belt fits your year and cab, what the OEM part numbers are, and how to change the belt yourself in about 20 minutes.

Which belt fits my Ranger XP 1000? (Fitment by year)

Use your model year and whether you have a 3-seat or Crew (6-seat) cab. If you're unsure of the year, it is the 10th character of your VIN.

Watch out for these two mix-ups. First, the 2020-and-newer Ranger 1000 (no "XP") uses a different belt, OEM 3211218, and it will not interchange with the XP 1000. Second, the 2018 model year is split: the 3-seat uses the 2018-2025 belt, but the 2018 Crew uses its own belt. If you have a 2018 Crew, order the Crew-only belt.

Why the stock belt keeps failing on a Ranger

Rangers get worked. Plowing snow, dragging a disc, hauling a bed full of feed, creeping along a fence line in low range for hours, or spinning 30-inch mud tires all put heat into the belt at low speed, which is exactly where a CVT belt is weakest. Add a slightly misaligned clutch after a rebuild, a dirty clutch cover, or a belt that never got broken in and the result is glazing, chunking, and eventually a belt that lets go on the far side of the property.

How to change the drive belt on a Ranger XP 1000

You need a 10 mm socket for the clutch cover, a T-handle or ratchet, and ideally a Hunterworks belt change screw or primary clutch spreading tool for the 2018-2026 models. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes the first time.

1. Park on level ground, turn the key off, and set the parking brake. Let the clutch cover cool if you were just riding; it gets hot enough to burn you.
2. Remove the clutch cover. On the XP 1000 it is on the passenger side under the bed. Pull the intake duct clamp, remove the 10 mm bolts around the cover, and set them aside in order. Note the position of the cover seal so it goes back the same way.
3. Inspect the old belt before you pull it. Glazed, shiny sidewalls mean heat and slip. Missing cogs or cracks across the belt mean shock loads or a belt that was run too long. Frayed edges point to a clutch alignment problem, which a new belt alone will not fix.
4. Spread the secondary clutch and roll the belt off. On the 2018-2026 models, thread the belt change screw into the secondary to hold the sheaves open. On the 2017, push the moveable sheave open by hand while rolling the belt off the secondary first, then the primary.
5. Clean both clutches. Wipe the sheave faces with brake cleaner and a clean rag until they are dry and free of rubber dust. Belt dust left on the sheaves will glaze the new belt in the first hour.
6. Install the new belt with the part numbers facing out and readable so the belt runs in the direction it was designed for. Roll it onto the primary first, then the secondary, and remove the belt change screw.
7. Set belt deflection. Rotate the secondary by hand a few turns so the belt seats. The belt should sit with its top edge roughly flush with the top of the secondary sheave. If it sits well below, the secondary shims may need adjusting.
8. Reinstall the cover and duct, torque the bolts snug, and reconnect the intake.

Break in the new belt (this is the step everyone skips)

A new belt needs 20 to 30 miles of easy riding to seat its cords and mate to the sheaves. Vary the speed, avoid wide-open throttle, and do not tow, plow, or crawl through deep mud during break-in. Skipping break-in is the most common reason a brand-new belt fails in the first week.

Belt still slipping or burning after replacement?

If a fresh belt is glazing or squealing within a few rides, the belt is not the root cause. Check these in order:

• Clutch alignment. Any time the engine or transmission mounts have been touched, or after a rebuild, check alignment with a Hunterworks clutch alignment tool for your year. A few thousandths of misalignment will eat belts.
• Clutch heat. Long low-range crawling, plowing, or big tires overheat the clutch cover. A Clutch Inline Blower moves hot air out and can cut belt temperatures significantly.
• Worn primary clutch. If the stock primary has 3,000-plus hard miles, the rollers and weights are worn and engagement gets harsh. Ranger XP 1000 belt FAQ

How long does a Ranger XP 1000 belt last? A stock belt that is broken in properly and not overheated usually lasts 1,500 to 3,000 miles. Heavy towing, plowing, or big tires can cut that in half. Many Ranger owners carry a spare belt and a belt change screw behind the seat for exactly this reason.

Can I use an RZR XP 1000 belt on my Ranger XP 1000? Not on 2018 and newer Rangers. The 2017 Ranger and some RZR models share belt dimensions, but the 2018-2026 Ranger XP 1000 uses a different belt (3211202 / 3211186). Always match by year and model.

Does the NorthStar cab change the belt? No. The 2019-2025 Ranger XP 1000 NorthStar, Premium, Trail Boss, and Texas Edition all use the same belt as the base XP 1000 for that year.
