Polaris Ranger XP 1000 vs Ranger 1000 SOHC: Which Drive Belt Fits?
Polaris Ranger XP 1000 vs Ranger 1000 SOHC: Which Drive Belt Fits?
Of every fitment question we get on the phone, this is the one that comes up most: I have a Polaris Ranger 1000, which belt do I need?
The honest answer is that "Ranger 1000" is not enough information to sell you a belt. Polaris builds two different machines whose names differ by two letters, and they do not share a CVT belt. Order by the name on the tailgate and there is a real chance you end up with a belt that will not fit, or one that fits badly and dies early.
Here is how to tell them apart, and which belt goes with which.
The two machines
The Ranger XP 1000 is the higher-output model. The Ranger 1000 — usually written SOHC or non-XP — is the lower-cost, lower-output work version. Different engine, different clutch calibration, different belt.
They were also sold side by side in the same showrooms for years, in similar colors, with similar cab options. That is why so many owners genuinely do not know which one is sitting in their shop.
Belt fitment at a glance
| Machine | Years | Hunterworks part | Buy it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranger XP 1000 (three seat) | 2018-2025 | HW 925RM | Ranger XP 1000 belt |
| Ranger XP 1000 Crew | 2019-2025 | HW 925RM | Ranger XP 1000 belt |
| Ranger XP 1000 Crew | 2018 only | Call us | Ranger XP 1000 parts |
| Ranger 1000 SOHC (non-XP) | 2020-2025 | HW NONXP | Ranger 1000 SOHC belt |
| Ranger XP 900 | 2013-2019 | Replaces OEM 3211149 / 3212326 | Ranger XP 900 parts |
Two things on that table are worth saying out loud.
First, the 2018 Ranger XP 1000 Crew is its own case. The HW 925RM covers the 2018 three-seat and the 2019-and-up Crew, but not the 2018 Crew. If that is your machine, call before you order rather than assuming.
Second, the SOHC belt and the XP belt are not interchangeable in either direction. This is not a situation where the stronger belt also fits the lesser machine.
How to tell which one you actually have
Work through these in order. Any one of them will usually settle it.
- Look for XP badging. Polaris badges the XP models. If the machine says "XP" on the bodywork or the tailgate, it is an XP. If it just says "Ranger 1000," that is a strong hint toward the SOHC — but keep going, because badges get swapped and bodywork gets replaced.
- Check the door jamb or frame sticker. The model sticker carries the full model name, which is more trustworthy than badging.
- Read the VIN. The VIN encodes the model. This is the authoritative answer, and it is the one a dealer parts counter will use.
- Call us and read the VIN out. (662) 631-9254. We will tell you which machine you have and which belt it takes. It takes two minutes and it is free, which is a better deal than a wrong belt.
If your title, sticker and badging disagree with each other — and that does happen on used machines — the VIN wins.
While the clutch cover is off
A belt change is the one time you have easy access to the whole CVT, so use it. These are the things that actually determine whether your new belt lasts a season or a month.
- Clean the belt dust out. On a Ranger that works for a living, it packs in faster than most owners expect, and it holds heat.
- Check the sheave faces. Grooving, steps, or blue heat discoloration mean the clutch is chewing belts and a new belt will not change that.
- Check clutch alignment. A belt being twisted every single revolution by misaligned clutches is being destroyed by geometry, not by power. Note that alignment tools are machine-specific — the tool for the 2020-2024 Ranger SOHC 1000 does not fit XP models. See how to check clutch alignment on a Polaris UTV.
- Confirm the CVT ducting is sealed and clear. The intake and exhaust ducts are how the belt sheds heat. A collapsed, disconnected or mud-blocked duct will end a good belt quickly.
- Inspect the secondary rollers. When they wear flat the clutch stops backshifting cleanly, which feels like a lazy machine and quietly eats belts. On 2021-and-newer Ranger XP 1000 machines, these rollers are the replacement — note they do not fit the SOHC.
- Break the new belt in. Easy throttle and varied speed for the first 25 to 50 miles, no towing, no hard launches. See the belt break-in procedure.
FAQ
Can I run the XP belt in my SOHC Ranger?
No. They are different belts. Run the one specified for your machine.
My Ranger 1000 is a 2019. Which belt?
The Hunterworks SOHC belt is specified for 2020-2025. For a 2019 non-XP, call us with the VIN — we are not going to guess at a year boundary on a belt.
I keep burning belts. Is a better belt the answer?
Sometimes, but usually not on its own. If you are replacing belts more than once a season, something else is doing the damage: misalignment, blocked CVT airflow, worn rollers, lugging the machine in high range, or a tired primary clutch. A stronger belt in a bad clutch just takes slightly longer to fail. Our piece on why belts slip walks through the causes in order of likelihood.
My high-hour Ranger bogs and shudders when it takes off. Belt?
That pattern often points at a worn primary clutch rather than the belt. A Duraclutch complete clutch system addresses the cause. Call us and we will tell you honestly which one you need — we would rather sell you the right part once.
Does using low range really matter?
Yes, more than any part you can buy. Lugging a loaded Ranger in high range is the fastest way to cook a belt.
