Snowmobile Drive Belt Guide: Which Belt Fits Your Ski-Doo or Arctic Cat

Next

A snowmobile belt does something no UTV belt is ever asked to do. It engages at wide-open throttle from a dead stop, holds high RPM for minutes at a stretch, and it does all of that while it is cold-soaked and stiff — which is exactly the moment it is carrying the most load. That is why sled belts fail differently than side-by-side belts, and why the belt you bought three seasons ago is probably not the belt you want in the hood this winter.

This is a fitment guide. Find your sled below, confirm the OEM number against the belt that came out of it, and you will know what you need. If your model is not on the list or you are between year breaks, call us at (662) 631-9254 before you order — we would rather spend two minutes on the phone than send you the wrong belt in October.

Ski-Doo belt fitment

Engine / platform Years Replaces OEM # Belt
Ski-Doo 850 E-TEC and 900 ACE Turbo / Turbo R 2019-2024 (see full model list on the product page) 417300571 Hunterworks Ski-Doo 850/900 belt
All 600cc Ski-Doo models 2010-present 417300551 Hunterworks Ski-Doo 600 belt

The 850/900 belt covers a wide spread of Ski-Doo chassis — Backcountry, Backcountry X and X-RS, Expedition LE / SE / SWT, and the rest of the 850 E-TEC and 900 ACE Turbo family. The full year-by-year list is on the product page, and it is worth reading rather than assuming, because Ski-Doo runs the same engine in machines with different clutching.

The 600 belt is the simpler case: if it is a 600cc Ski-Doo built in 2010 or later, this is the belt. That covers Expedition, Grand Touring, GSX, MXZ, Renegade, Summit and Tundra variants.

One note on the Hunterworks Arctic Cat belts that matters more than any marketing claim: they are made in the USA in the same facility that produces the OEM belt. You are not buying a reverse-engineered copy, you are buying a belt built on the same line with a compound chosen for abuse rather than for warranty cost.

The GBoost World's Best belt for the earlier 7000/8000/9000 sleds is a different animal — it is a high-clamp-force belt that wants a lot of belt squeeze to stop it slipping. If your sled is stock and lightly tuned, it is more belt than you need. If you are turbocharged, big-bore, or running serious clutch weight, it is the right call.

Changing a sled belt: the short version

  1. Let it cool. A belt that just came off a hard pull is hot enough to deform if you fight it off the sheaves.
  2. Open the clutch guard and release belt tension. On most sleds you spread the secondary (driven) sheaves — many machines have a dedicated spread position or a bolt for this. Do not pry against the sheave faces with a screwdriver; a nicked sheave will chew the new belt.
  3. Note the direction. Most belts have an arrow or printed text that must face out. Reinstalling a belt backwards costs you performance and belt life for no reason.
  4. Roll the new belt on over the secondary first, then walk it onto the primary while rotating the clutch by hand.
  5. Check deflection before you button it up. The belt should ride at the correct height in the sheaves — too high or too low and it is being worn out by geometry, not by power.
  6. Keep the old belt as a spare if it still has meat on it. Carrying a spare under the hood is standard practice on a sled for good reason.

Pre-season belt check

Before the first ride of the year, pull the clutch guard and look at four things:

  • Width. Measure the belt top width and compare it to spec. A belt that has narrowed is done, even if it looks fine.
  • Glazing. Shiny, hard side walls mean the belt has been slipping and has cooked. It will not grip the way it did new.
  • Cords and edges. Any frayed cord, missing cog, or chunked edge means replace it now, not after it strands you ten miles out.
  • Sheave faces. Run a fingernail across them. Grooves, burrs or belt residue will destroy a new belt quickly — clean them before the new belt goes in.

Two habits that extend sled belt life more than any purchase

Warm the machine and the belt before hard pulls. This is the single biggest one. A cold belt is stiff, and a stiff belt being asked to engage at full throttle is where most early failures start. Five minutes of easy riding changes the whole season.

Check belt deflection. It takes a few minutes and it is the difference between a belt wearing out evenly and a belt wearing out on one shoulder. Deflection drifts as the belt breaks in, so check it again after the first few rides on a new belt.

FAQ

How long should a snowmobile belt last? There is no honest mileage number — it depends entirely on how the sled is ridden and clutched. A trail sled ridden at cruising speed can go several seasons. A mountain sled doing repeated full-throttle sidehill pulls can cook a belt in a weekend. Inspect by condition, not by odometer.

Can I use a UTV belt on a snowmobile? No. The sheave geometry, the width and the engagement profile are different, and the duty cycle is different. Use a belt built for your sled.

Do I need to break in a new sled belt? Yes, and it is worth doing. Ride easy for the first 20 to 30 miles so the belt seats into the sheaves evenly before you load it hard. A belt that is broken in properly runs cooler for the rest of its life.

My belt is slipping but it looks new — what now? Slipping on a new belt usually points at the clutches rather than the belt: wrong deflection, worn secondary rollers or helix, glazed sheave faces, or clutch weights that are not matched to the setup. Call us and describe what the sled is doing.

My OEM number is not on this list. Call (662) 631-9254. We will not guess at a fitment, and we would rather tell you we do not stock it than sell you a belt that does not fit.
