UTV Clutch Blower Explained: Does It Actually Save Belts?

Somewhere between "my belt keeps breaking" and "I guess I'll buy another belt" there is a question most owners never get a straight answer to: why does the belt keep dying? Nine times out of ten the answer is heat, and heat is an airflow problem before it is a belt problem.

That is the argument for a clutch blower. It is also why a blower is one of the few upgrades that makes a machine cheaper to own rather than more expensive.

What a clutch blower actually is

Your CVT housing already has cooling. On almost every Polaris and Can-Am, it works like this: a fan is cast into or bolted onto the primary clutch, ductwork runs from an intake up near the cab down to the housing, and a second duct carries hot air back out. When the primary spins, the fan spins, and air moves.

The problem is right there in that sentence. The factory fan only moves air in proportion to engine RPM. And the situations that destroy belts are almost all low-speed situations:

  • Rock crawling, where the belt is slipping constantly at low ground speed
  • Pulling an implement or a trailer at walking pace
  • Long slow climbs in sand or mud
  • Sitting at idle with a hot clutch after a hard run

In every one of those cases the belt is generating its maximum heat while the OEM fan is doing close to its minimum work. A clutch blower is an electric fan plumbed into that same ductwork that runs on its own, independent of what the engine is doing. It ventilates the housing at 4 mph exactly as well as at 60.

The three things it actually does

1. It pulls heat out at low speed. This is the headline. Active venting means the housing gets purged of hot air even when you are barely moving, which is when the belt needs it most.

2. It vacuums out belt dust. The blower draws air out of the housing rather than pushing it in. Belt dust and fine grit go out with it instead of circulating through the sheaves and glazing them. Cleaner sheaves grip better, and better grip means less slip, and less slip means less heat. It compounds.

3. It does not change your service routine. The units we sell install with the factory connector — true plug and play, with a quick disconnect if you need to pull it for troubleshooting. The fan does not sit in the way of a belt change.

Honest limits: when a blower will not help

We would rather you not buy one than buy one that does not fix your problem. A blower is the wrong purchase if:

  • Your ducting is already compromised. If the CVT intake or exhaust duct is cracked, unseated or packed with mud, adding a fan to a broken system does nothing. Pull the ducting and check it first. This is free.
  • Your clutches are misaligned. If the crankshaft and transmission input shaft are not correctly spaced and parallel, the belt is being twisted once per revolution. No amount of airflow fixes a geometry problem. Check it with the alignment tool for your model.
  • You are lugging the machine in high range. Low range exists for a reason. If you are crawling in high, the belt is slipping because you are asking it to, and a fan is a bandage.

Work through those three first. If all three check out and you are still going through belts, the blower is the next thing worth money.

Which blower fits your machine

All of the units below are Hunterworks, made in the USA, low amp draw (2.0 amp at startup, 1.7 amp continuous) with water- and dust-resistant motors and welded aluminum housings. Airflow varies by application.

Two of these need extra care. The Ranger blower has three different part numbers depending on year and whether the machine has Ride Command, and it does not fit 2018-and-newer High Lifter or Back Country editions. The Defender blower splits into SKU 10227 and SKU 10228 by year and trim. If yours is anywhere near a boundary, call us.

FAQ

Will a clutch blower drain my battery?

These draw 2.0 amps at startup and 1.7 amps continuously. That is less than most light bars and well within what the charging system on any of these machines handles.

Does it replace the factory clutch fan?

No. It works alongside it. The OEM fan keeps doing what it does at speed; the blower covers the low-speed gap the OEM fan cannot.

Will it survive water and mud?

The motors are water- and dust-resistant and specifically designed to operate in adverse conditions, in a welded aluminum housing. That said, nothing electrical is indestructible if you submerge it repeatedly.

Do I still need to change my belt on schedule?

Yes. A blower extends belt life, it does not make belts permanent. Keep a spare belt and a belt change tool in the machine regardless.

Is it hard to install?

It uses the factory connector, so electrically it is plug and play. The mechanical side involves getting into the clutch ductwork, which is a couple of hours for most people working carefully the first time. Hunterworks publishes install instructions and wiring diagrams for each application, linked on the individual product pages.
