Can-Am Outlander, Renegade & Commander Drive Belt Guide: Which Belt Fits (2009-2026)

Can-Am spreads one belt across a surprising number of machines, then changes it without much warning. The result is a lot of people ordering a belt that looks right on paper and does not fit the machine in the shed. This guide lays out what actually fits what, with the Hunterworks part numbers, and it is honest about where the year ranges overlap and you should call instead of guessing.

Can-Am Outlander & Renegade belt fitment

The Outlander and Renegade share a belt family across a remarkably wide range of displacements — one belt covers fifteen model years and six engine sizes. Then 2025 arrives and it changes.

Machine Years Hunterworks part Replaces OEM
Outlander 500 / 570 / 650 / 800 / 850 / 1000
Renegade 500 / 570 / 650 / 800 / 850 / 1000
All trims: XT, XT-P, DPS, MAX, X mr
2009-2024 HW 521KM Call to confirm
Outlander 500 & 700 2023-2026 HW CA7M 422280225, 420280225
Outlander 850 & 1000 2025 HW CA7M 422280225, 420280225

Read this before you order a 2023 or 2024 Outlander 500 or 700 belt. Those two model years fall inside both ranges above — the 2009-2024 HW 521KM listing and the 2023-2026 HW CA7M listing. Can-Am changed the platform partway through, and which belt you need depends on your specific machine, not on the year alone. Do not guess between them. Call (662) 631-9254 with your model year and we will read it against your machine before you spend a dime.

Can-Am Commander belt fitment

The Commander is cleaner, with one hard break at 2021. The mistake we correct most often on the phone is a 2021-or-newer owner ordering the older belt because the model name did not change.

Machine Years Hunterworks part
Commander 800 & Commander MAX 800 2011-2020 HW 521KM
Commander 1000 & Commander MAX 1000 2011-2020 HW 521KM
Commander 1000 — all models 2021-2025 HW CAX3M
Commander 700 — all models 2022-2025 See listing (OEM 422280225 / 420280225)

Two things to burn into memory here. First, the 2021-2025 Commander 1000 does not use the same belt as the 2011-2020 Commander 1000 — it takes the HW CAX3M, not the HW 521KM. Second, the Commander 700 does not share a belt with the Commander 1000 of any year. Same badge on the hood, different belt in the clutch.

How to change the belt without pulling the primary

On most of these machines you do not have to pull the primary clutch at all. The Can-Am secondary belt change tool threads into the secondary and spreads the sheaves with a 4mm allen head, which turns a shop visit into a ten-minute job on the tailgate. It fits most Outlanders and Renegades — but not the 2024-2025 Outlander and Renegade 850/1000, and not the Commander 800. Check your machine against the listing, or call us.

  1. Park it cold. A clutch that just came off the trail will burn you. Give it twenty minutes.
  2. Pull the CVT cover. Keep the bolts in order — several lengths are usually mixed in there.
  3. Spread the secondary. Thread the belt change tool in and run it down until the sheaves open far enough for the belt to lift out.
  4. Get the old belt out and read it. Fraying on one edge means alignment. Glazing means slip. Cords showing means it was past due. The old belt tells you whether you have a belt problem or a clutch problem.
  5. Clean the housing. Belt dust is abrasive and it holds heat. Blow it out and wipe the sheave faces down.
  6. Check the ducting. On Can-Ams the CVT intake and exhaust ducting is a known failure point. A cracked or unseated duct will quietly destroy every belt you put in after it.
  7. Fit the new belt, back the tool out, reinstall the cover. Note the direction arrow if the belt has one.
  8. Break it in. Roughly 20-25 miles of easy, varied-speed driving. No full-throttle pulls and no towing until it has seated.

Why Can-Am belts die early

If you are going through more than one belt a season, the belt brand is almost never the real answer. Three things cause most of it:

  • Heat. Low ground speed under load with no air moving through the housing is the worst case, and it is exactly how an Outlander gets used in mud or a Commander gets used towing. Keep the ducting sealed and the housing clean.
  • Belt deflection set wrong. On Can-Am ATVs this is the single setting most often left incorrect after a belt change. A belt riding too high or too low in the sheaves is being worn out by geometry, not by power.
  • Water. These machines get ridden through crossings. After a deep one, dry the clutch out properly before you load it up again — a wet belt under load slips, and slip is heat.

A Can-Am clutch puller and the Hunterworks Can-Am clutch holder tool are what you need if you are going deeper than a belt swap — the puller gets the primary off a tapered crank without wrecking the threads, the holder lets you torque the bolt back to spec.

FAQ

Does the Outlander really use one belt from 2009 to 2024?
For 2009-2024 machines, yes — the HW 521KM covers Outlander and Renegade from the 500 up to the 1000, across all trims. It is one of the widest-fitting belts we stock. The 2025 models are the exception.

My Commander is a 2021. Can I use the belt that fit my 2019?
No. The 2021 and newer Commander 1000 takes the HW CAX3M. This is the most common Commander mix-up we see.

Are Hunterworks belts actually better than OEM?
They are made in the USA with an aramid cord and a higher-temperature compound, cut to tighter tolerances than the factory belt. On a machine that tows or crawls, that shows up as belt life. We are an authorized Hunterworks dealer, so what you get is the genuine article.

How do I know if it is the belt or the clutch?
Read the old belt. Even edge wear and normal thickness loss is a belt that simply wore out. Uneven wear on one edge, or a belt that looks fine but slips, points at the clutch — alignment, worn bushings or glazed sheaves. Our guide to the 5 signs a UTV belt is about to fail goes through what to look for.

What if my machine is not in the tables above?
Call. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you order the wrong belt.
