Polaris RZR 900 Drive Belt Guide: XP 900, Trail 900 & S 900
Polaris has put the number 900 on a lot of different machines over the last fifteen years, and that is the root of most of the confusion. A 2012 RZR XP 900 and a 2022 RZR Trail 900 share a badge and almost nothing else. They have different clutches, different shaft spacing, and they do not take the same drive belt.
This guide sorts out which belt fits what, which clutch alignment tool matches your year, and what actually causes a 900 to go through belts. If you get partway in and are not certain which machine you have, stop and call us at (662) 631-9254. We would rather spend two minutes on the phone than have you install a belt that does not fit.
The three generations of 900
- 2011-2014 RZR XP 900 and XP4 900. The original performance 900. This is the machine that started the sport side-by-side arms race, and a lot of them are still being ridden hard.
- 2015 RZR 900. A one-year transition. This year is its own fitment for alignment tooling and is the single most common mistake we see.
- 2016-2025 RZR 900, RZR 900 Trail and RZR S 900. The current trail-oriented 900 family, in two-seat and four-seat versions.
Which drive belt fits my RZR 900?
| Your machine | Belt |
|---|---|
| 2011-2014 RZR XP 900, XP4 900, and the 2013 Jagged X 900 | Hunterworks CVT belt for 2011-2014 RZR XP 900 & XP4 900 |
| 2015-2025 RZR 900, RZR 900 Trail, RZR S 900 — two-seat and four-seat | Hunterworks CVT belt for 2015-2025 RZR 900 / Trail / S |
Both are made in the USA by Hunterworks with a proprietary construction — stronger cord, a compound that tolerates more heat, and tighter tolerances than the belt Polaris originally supplied. We also stock SuperATV G-Boost and Assault Industries Reaper belts for the 900 family if you prefer one of those.
About OEM cross-reference numbers
For the 2011-2014 RZR XP 900, the OEM belt numbers are 3211142 and 3212326.
For the 2015-2025 900, Trail 900 and S 900, you will find several Polaris numbers floating around on parts sites, often lumped together across models that do not actually share a belt. We are not going to publish a number we have not confirmed for your specific machine. Call (662) 631-9254 with your year and trim and we will confirm it against the real fitment data rather than guess.
The alignment tool split nobody warns you about
This is the part that costs people belts. Clutch alignment tools are year-specific because shaft spacing and crankshaft tapers changed, and the 900 line changed more than most. Using the wrong tool tells you nothing useful.
| Your machine | Hunterworks alignment tool |
|---|---|
| 2011-2014 RZR 900 XP / XP4 | CAT1114XP9 |
| 2013 RZR XP 900 Jagged X only | CAT1415 |
| 2015 RZR 900 — Trail, Trail EPS/EBS, S, four-seat | CAT900R |
| 2016-2025 RZR 900, all models | CAT16- |
Note that 2015 gets its own tool and the Jagged X gets its own tool. If you own either one and you buy the tool that merely looks right for the year range, you have wasted the money.
The tool sits on the crankshaft and the transmission shaft of the CVT and tells you in about five minutes whether your center-to-center distance and offset are where Polaris intended. See all alignment tools.
Why 900s eat belts
The 900 cars are lighter than the turbo machines, and owners often assume that means an easy life for the CVT. The opposite is usually true. A 900 gets ridden on tight, technical trails, which means constant on-off throttle at low speed — the belt is repeatedly grabbing and slipping while the machine is moving too slowly to push much air through the clutch housing. That is the fastest way to put heat into a belt.
When a 900 goes through belts, it is almost always one of four things:
- Clutch misalignment. The belt is being twisted every single revolution. It wears out on geometry, not on power, and no belt brand fixes it.
- Blocked CVT airflow. The intake and exhaust ducting is cracked, disconnected or packed with mud. The clutch cannot breathe.
- Packed belt dust. Years of belt dust in the housing acts as insulation and holds heat in.
- Glazed sheaves. Shiny, polished clutch faces will slick off a brand new belt in short order.
Those four are worth checking before you spend money on a clutch kit. More on the warning signs in 5 signs your UTV drive belt is about to fail and why your RZR belt is slipping.
Changing the belt
- Park on level ground, engine off and cool, park brake on. A CVT housing holds heat for a long time after shutdown.
- Remove the clutch cover. Keep the bolts organized — they are not all the same length on every 900.
- Note how the old belt sits, then work it off the secondary first, then the primary.
- Read the old belt before you throw it away. Even cord wear means normal life. Glazing means slipping. Frayed edges or a chunk missing from one side points at alignment. Cracks across the ribs mean heat.
- Blow or brush all the belt dust out of the housing. Check the sheave faces for glazing and scuff them with scotch-brite and brake cleaner if needed.
- Check the ducting. Both intake and exhaust, all the way through, for mud, water and cracks.
- Fit the new belt, observing any direction arrow. Set deflection to spec — too tight runs hot, too loose slips and glazes.
- Reinstall the cover and torque the fasteners evenly.
For deeper clutch work, the HW Universal Polaris primary clutch puller covers 2015-2025 RZR 900 and 2011-2014 RZR XP 900 among many others, and the Polaris primary clutch holder tool lets you torque the bolt back down correctly.
Break a new belt in
Run a new belt gently for the first 25 miles or so. No full-throttle pulls, no towing, no long climbs, and vary the speed rather than holding one throttle position. A belt that seats evenly in the sheaves during break-in lasts noticeably longer than one that was hammered from new. It costs you one easy ride and it is the cheapest belt life you will ever buy.
FAQ
Does a RZR S 900 use the same belt as a RZR 900 Trail?
Yes. From 2015 through 2025, the RZR 900, RZR 900 Trail and RZR S 900 all share the same Hunterworks belt, in both two-seat and four-seat versions.
Will a 2011-2014 XP 900 belt fit my 2016 RZR 900?
No. Those are different machines with different belts. This is the most common mix-up in the 900 line.
My 900 is a 2015. Which alignment tool?
The CAT900R, which is specific to 2015. Do not order the 2016-2025 tool.
How long should a 900 belt last?
There is no honest single number — it depends entirely on terrain, load and how the machine is driven. What we can tell you is that if you are replacing belts far more often than people you ride with, the cause is almost certainly alignment or airflow rather than the belt itself.
Should I carry a spare?
Yes, along with the tools to fit it. A spare belt in the machine turns a trip-ending failure into a stop on the trail.
Still not sure?
