Polaris Sportsman & Scrambler Drive Belt Guide: Which CVT Belt Fits Your ATV

Almost every belt guide on the internet is written for side-by-sides. That leaves Polaris ATV owners guessing, and the Sportsman and Scrambler lines are exactly where guessing gets expensive: the model names repeat across fifteen model years, the same badge covers two different clutch setups, and the belt that fits a Sportsman 570 will not fit a Sportsman 850.

This is the guide we wish existed. Below is what actually fits a Polaris Sportsman and Scrambler, how to change the belt without damaging anything, and the two parts that decide whether your next belt lasts a season or a weekend.

Sportsman and Scrambler belt fitment

Fix'N Offroad stocks the USA-made Hunterworks belts for the big-bore Polaris ATVs. Here is the coverage, straight from Hunterworks' own fitment data:

Machine Years Belt
Sportsman 550 2011-2014 Hunterworks HW-851KG
Sportsman XP 850 2009-2014 Hunterworks HW-851KG
Sportsman 850 (EPS, High Lifter, Touring) 2010-2025 Hunterworks HW-851KG
Sportsman 1000 (EPS, XP, Touring XP, 1000 S) 2015-2025 Hunterworks HW-851KG
Scrambler 850 2013-2025 Hunterworks HW-851K
Scrambler 1000 (XP and 1000 S) 2014-2025 Hunterworks HW-851K

Note the part numbers are close but not the same: HW-851KG for the Sportsman, HW-851K for the Scrambler. They are not interchangeable, and one letter is all that separates them on an invoice.

We also carry the SuperATV G-Boost heavy-duty belts in Extreme Badass, Mud Monster and Sand Storm compounds for both platforms — Sportsman and Scrambler. SuperATV lists these as cross-references for Polaris OEM belt numbers 3211106, 3211113, 3211123, 3211130, 3211153, 3211160, 3211161 and 3211203 across the Sportsman and Scrambler range. We deliberately do not map those numbers to individual model years here, because Polaris reused several of them. If you have an OEM number off an old belt or a dealer invoice, call (662) 631-9254 and we will match it against your machine rather than have you order on a guess.

Smaller Sportsman models — the 450, 500 and 570 — use a different clutch family entirely. Those are not covered by the belts above.

How to change a Sportsman or Scrambler belt

  1. Let it cool. A belt that just failed is hot enough to burn you and the clutch sheaves are worse. Give it fifteen minutes.
  2. Pull the clutch cover and get the old belt out. Keep it — the wear pattern tells you why it died.
  3. Read the old belt. Glazed and shiny both sides means slipping and heat. Chunked cogs mean shock load. Frayed on one edge means misalignment or a bad sheave. Worn narrow but even means it simply wore out, which is the good answer.
  4. Clean the housing. Blow all the belt dust out. Packed dust insulates the clutch and holds heat against the next belt.
  5. Check the sheave faces on both clutches. Run a fingernail across them. Grooving, bluing or a rough ridge will eat a new belt quickly, and no belt brand fixes a bad sheave.
  6. Install the new belt the right way round. Most Hunterworks belts are directional and marked. Seat it over the secondary first, spread the sheaves, then walk it onto the primary.
  7. Break it in. Roughly 25 miles of easy, varied riding before you load it up. Skipping break-in is one of the most common reasons a good belt fails early.

If the primary has to come off — for a sheave inspection, a roller change or a rebuild — use a puller that matches the crankshaft thread. The Polaris Scrambler/Sportsman primary clutch puller covers 2017-2021 Sportsman 850/1000 and 2017-2021 Scrambler 850/1000. The wrong puller strips the clutch or the crank, and a crank is not a cheap mistake.

The part most people miss: secondary rollers

On the 850 and 1000 Polaris ATVs, the secondary clutch uses plastic pucks that wear square. Once they do, the clutch stops backshifting cleanly, the belt runs hotter, and you buy belts instead of fixing the cause. The 2017-2025 Scrambler/Sportsman secondary roller kit replaces them with high-temp rollers tested to 400 degrees, which restores the backshift and stops the square-puck wear that chews up the secondary itself.

If your machine has high hours and has gone slow to engage or shudders on takeoff, that is a worn primary talking, not a bad belt. For the smaller Sportsman, the Duraclutch R-Series for the Sportsman 450, 500 and 570 replaces both clutches with a system built for smoother starts and longer belt life. You will need your transmission number to order the right kit — it is the only way to be sure.

FAQ

How long should a Sportsman belt last? On a machine used for food plots, fence lines and hunting, a good belt should give you years. If you are replacing one every season, the belt is the symptom and something in the clutch or the airflow is the cause.

Why do ATV belts fail faster than side-by-side belts? Short trips under load at low speed. A Sportsman spends most of its working life in the rev range where a CVT is least efficient and the belt never gets a steady cruise to shed heat.

Does mud riding kill belts? Water in the clutch housing does. If you submerge the machine, pull the drain plug and dry the clutches out before you ride hard again. Keep the CVT intake snorkel clear and the exhaust duct attached — on an ATV this is the maintenance item that gets neglected and it costs belts.

Can I use a Scrambler belt on a Sportsman? No. HW-851K and HW-851KG are different belts.

Is a Hunterworks belt actually better than the OEM? It is built with stronger cord and a compound that tolerates more heat than the belt Polaris ships. It is made in the USA, measured and inspected before it leaves the building.
